For example, Little Miss Muffet.. you know the one. Where we are led to believe that spiders are "scary" and we should be afraid of them.
Is this why a lot of people are scared of spiders, as it is passed down from generations??

No, nursery rhymes do not harm you if you know they are merely tales to be told, not an historical fact.

That goes for everything, you are not scared of what you know does not exist. If kids were/are taught the full facts/details of such things, then no problem in later life.

People are scared of spiders because of films like arachnophobia and people are scared of bees & wasps after that film about killer bees, you know the one with Michael Caine in it. (I can couch for the above being true). The problem with films over fairytales etc is that films show graphic details and use real/based on real creepy Crawlies, therefore are alot harder to forget/remember it's not real.

Each to their own but I don't think nursery rhymes are the cause for any phobias of any kind, well other than not likeing crap stories.

I'm not sure about this, but possibly.

Iona and Peter Opie published the Oxford Dictionary to Nursery Rhymes in the 1950's. They traced back the rhyme and translated it into it's original language if not English.

Most the nursery rhymes seem to stem from doom and dispair so could easily help to cause us to be scared of things, I know I've never liked geese because of the Goosy, Goosy Gander rhyme.

I think it has more to do with them being misunderstood (spiders that is). Not just being misunderstood by a child but also adults. As a child your normally told to stay away from certain things. Like stay away from spiders and snakes because they can bite you and you could get sick or die. Growing up I was scared of spiders, mostly big ones, because I thought they wanted to bite me. Then one year for reading I read a story about a girl who wanted a tarantula. I don't remember what the book said but from that point on I wasn't as scared of spiders as I had been. In fact I'm very fascinated by them. Not that I'm going to go play with them but I don't kill them. If one is indoors I will try and get it outside before resorting to death.
Some spiders can make you sick but it's very very rare to die from a spider bite. Especially in this day in age. Most spiders are not aggressive so it's not like they want to bite anyone. It's normally to protect themselves from us. After all were like giants to them.

No, people have a natural fear of spiders, as some have for water or heights. Nursery rhymes just emphasize lessons of life and bad things that could happen to us if we don't pay enough attention to the dangers that are hidden among us.

Unless you're caught up in a James Patterson novel, I don't think nursery rhymes are deadly.
People might to some extent fears and phobias from the adults around them based on observing their behaviour and having their experiences limited, but I don't think they get passed down through nursery rhymes.

Well.I can't say that because it actually depends on the people if they want to believe it or not. Nursery rhymes are for fun not for people to believe. Most people are scared of spiders because of there feelings.

NO. We are afraid of spiders ect because I believe it is a inbuilt safety system in our structure of a human being. Some of us are more afraid than others, we evolve...
