Because, unfortunately, they're daft as a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide. I used to work in a rural area and my lift into work frequently picked up roadkill to cook. Not my cup of tea, but she liked it...

They have not yet adapted (evolutionarily) to the existence of cars. Species need time to evolve and if they don't do it fast enough, they go the way of the dinosaurs.
