"I am fine. Thank you" works for me!

If its an unsolicited door-to-door or telephone salesman I normally reply: "I don't know I'm not a doctor". Then I hang up!

If its a friend or relative I will give a very brief summary of how I'm feeling.

If its a formal occasion, work or other social event with people I don't know very well I will say "I'm feeling great (or fine, etc - but always positive), how are you?"

The proper (correct) reply, believe it or not, IS: "I'm WELL, thank you."

Replying that you are "fine" sounds like a young girl describing herself in street vernacular as being attractive instead of well... if I know the person well enough, I respond to that "fine" reply with, "Aren't you the presumptuous one??!!!"

depends on who asks... in a formal setting or some one I don't know I usually say something like fine thank you and you but if its a friend i tell them the truth either way keep it short and to the point

I would say, "I'm good, thank you for asking. How are you doing? What have you been up to?"
People like to talk about themselves, and the longer I keep them talking, the more time I have to think of something interesting to talk about, that they might be interested in, or more questions to ask.

The proper response is "very well, thank you. How are you?"

How are you......emm I'd say it depends on the situation....if it's a formal situation I'm fine thank you and you? in any other situation you can say just about anything.....

The first response you mentioned seems to foot the bill.

Fine, thanks for asking. Never, ever ask how they are. They might actually tell you and you'll have to admit that you weren't really interested. BTW, why do English say alright? and Americans say whatsup?
