The negative comments are only anecdotal, but there is enough evidence to suggest that minimizing artificial sweeteners is a good idea. When you HAVE to use an artificial sweetener, go for Splenda. It has the least complaints against it.

A better idea is to buy stevia. Stevia is a purely plant-based sweetener, but is so potent that just a small amount is sufficient so it has no calories. The only downside to stevia is that it does not mix well in cold drinks, but does well in warm/hot drinks. There are stevia products in liquid form, which resolves the problem, but liquid stevia is not as easy to find. For the most part grocery stores have not started carrying stevia yet, but you can it at almost any health food store and WalMart Super Centers have recently started carrying the powder form of stevia.

No it truly is not undesirable for you. The clinical tests that were performed on mice were ridiculous because they gave the mice an incredibily severe dosage, no longer something resembling what the traditional human being might want to eat. Sweeteners surely include an analogous ingredient as ingesting bananas and milk. Use carefully for sure.

The artificial sweeteners I know of (brand called "Equal") contain phenylalanine, which is a type of amino acid (building block of protein). I don't see anything terribly wrong with using sweeteners (less calories/kilojoules), but too much of it will have a laxative effect as most packagings would claim, including Extra/Wrigley's chewing gum.

Yes! Aspartame and Acesulfame K are the ones to worry about. There are numerous studies and reports of the dangers of these two chemicals. One of the worst facts is the presence of the chemical Formaldehyde. This is commonly used in pressed wood products like MDF and is also a preservative in many other cosmetic and household products, as well as being used in embalming. It is a known carcinogen. Many suspected cases of auto-immune diseases, such as MS and lupus, as well as a host of other medical problems, is attributed to these sweeteners and patients improved considerably when they stopped ingesting them. I would advise you to stop using them.

I have been using them for my whole life and I think they are harmless unless you drink lots of artificially sweetened drinks in which case you are probably consuming too much
