Solos are passed around amongst different instruments. In concert bands, the flute, piccolo or clarinet often has a solo and sometimes trumpet. The saxophone and trumpets most often have the solos in jazz band.

It all depends on the piece. When you say "solo," do you mean the melody? Or do you mean an actual solo, where only one person plays and the rest of the band accompanies?

If it's the first, then most pieces will use different instruments at different times for the melody. If the second, well, there are many pieces for every instrument accomanied by the rest of the band.

It depends on what type of song the band is playing. Any instrument can have a solo. It really does just depend on the song.

most likely the trumpet is featured. in addition to the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and on a rare occasion, the french horn.

However, many pieces that feature french horn can use the alto saxophone to double the sound or actually feature the Saxophone instead.
