There are several American accents. People in the deep south have a very slow drawl and often are not understandable to others. There are several regional "southern accents" and a skilled listener can tell if someone is from the Richmond area or the Atlanta area, say. Brooklyn residents have a great and strange accent famous throughout the world. People from the far Northeast have another accent. Mountain folks in the East still another.

I think once you learn to hear and speak any language somewhat fluently...then you can begin to work on ennunciation of difficult vowel/ consonant combinations different from your own language. There are classes offered for this but if youre going to try it on your own at home, pick up some tapes from the library and practice. Its best to work with someone that can listen to your pronunciations and give you helpful feedback. good luck.

If you're already in America, no special efforts need be made. It's all around you, and you'll pick it up.

But, be aware that Brits will sneer at you, the French will despise you, and the rest of the world will imagine that everything that's wrong anyplace on earth is your fault.
