"I am a Canadian,
free to speak without fear,
free to worship in my own way,
free to stand for what I think right,
free to oppose what I believe wrong,
or free to choose those
who shall govern my country.
This heritage of freedom
I pledge to uphold
for myself and all mankind."

The above is a quote from Prime Minister Dienfenbaker as a synapse of the Canadian Bill of rights and it is that which is being lost all too quickly in American acts like the "Patriot act"and others

I would have pasted an American quote but I am more familiar with Cdn ones - Itwas said to me recently that American policy has no effect on me so why do I care?

In fact it does have an impact on every last person in the world

Do you think the US in it'sfever to fight terror has fast becomeing what it claims to fight an unfree state ?

I think you know that isn't true and you are in a lot of danger down there because of these reforms .

Nope no jealosy here .

Why don't you come up here and spend a day - go shopping - try it - when was the last time you went to another nation ?

At the very least it would give you more to complain about later .......

Right. The thing is, in the USA there are already legal procedures for wiretaps with deferred warrants; almost any information can be obtained using our legal secret courts.

Our own military officers disagree with the rules on interrogation and imprisonment bypassing the Geneva conventions that have been proposed by our president because it could put our own soldiers at risk from other countries adopting the same rules.

So either this is a power grab by the executive or they are really lazy and do not want to spend the money or time on doing things legally---"it would be so much easier in a dictatorship, especially if I'm the dictator":

Trouble is with our Congress full of people who think they might be president one day, who do we have to make laws limiting executive power any more?

absolutely. In its misguided efforts, the United states is becomeg the kind of police state where even thinking the wrong thing, being from the wrong political party, or being anything but a Christian as the govenrment defines the term, can get you, assasulted fired, jailed, or just made to disappear. had the first three and waiting for the last...

So the main thing that is getting lost in all of this is the sense of freedom that was once prevalent. Of course that is only natural since the ACTUAL freedom was lost half a century ago.

i live about 25 miles south of the border. when i first moved here i could have zipped up the road and visited you in 30 minutes. or you could have come down to my place. that doesn't happen anymore. kind of a shame, hell, it's a disgrace. we could have solved the problems of the world, but that's not going to happen now; i'm not going through the hassle, and you may be treated as a suspected terrorist, so you're not coming down. not to mention the fruitcake vigilantes on the border "protecting america" from you dangerous canadians. so we won't be finding a cure for cancer or world hunger or whatever and you won't be spending your money at our mall. it's a vicious cycle. i totally agree with you.

not one right or freedom has been "lost" due to the patriot act! you or no one else has yet to provide proof of that. scare tactics are used by cowards when no other proof can be shown. Proof of that is the left wing party and it use of these tactics to get votes!!! canada must really suck for you to spend all of your time worrying about America! or is it pure Jealousy?

you still show no resources or proof to your lies Is that truly the Reich led canadain way!!!

you're right- it should matter to you. "an injustice anywhere is an injustice, anywhere" - i forget who said that, but if i had to guess, i'd say..................rosa parks.

there are those who believe that they are not trying to fight terrorism, but rather to use terrorism as an excuse to establish a fascist society (hence the FASCI on the united states dime and seal of the senate). read about the Reichstag Fire and it might make more sense.
