as children we are more afraid of fictional monsters. They seem to be the scariest things in the world. As we grow up we realize that humans are scarier than anything we could dream up.

It means that I should be more afraid of some psycho with a gun breaking into my house than I should be of, say, a vampire coming in.

It's why horror movies involving humans doing awful stuff will always be scarier than movies like King Kong or Jurassic Park.
