I have some dreary work to do for work, I have been putting it off for weeks. Don't want to do it as seems like mental torture, but is necessary. What's a good incentive?

Break it down to small tasks, and allocate a short amount of time each day to do it, as in 10 minutes every day for the purpose of making this smaller. During these ten minutes, though, work hard to get it out of your way.
At the end of these 10 minutes reward yourself with a tea or coffee break to unwind and forget about the dreariness of the task.

Before long, you will have shrunk the size of this horrible task and soon enough you will have a true sense of achievement because you are tackling it without causing yourself some irreversible motivational damage.

Good Luck!

I always start something horrid as soon as I can, even if I just spend half an hour planning, then at least I know I've made a start and finishing the task never seems as daunting after that. Also, get yourself some sort of reward for completing it, like you'll take yourself shopping or arrange to go out for a meal with friends, but only allow yourself the reward if you actually complete your task!

Always I break down the tougher task into smaller ones. Then i started doing. If I get good outcome through that smaller ones this will automatically boosted me to do the work beyond the expectation.
I always do my any given work with full involvement or commitment. This is also one way to motivate myself.
