i have heard that some bread in the mouth will prevent crying while chopping onions, but i believe it is a wive's tale...
onions release irritants while being chopped, so the best way to prevent or reduce reactions to the irritant is to use a very sharp knife to cut the onion (less damage to cell walls vs. dull knife that squishes it's way through onion) or use a food processor.

I don't know about chewing anything, but putting the onions in the freezer for about 20 minutes before chopping them will help with the crying.

Not heard about chewing but burning a candle while cutting the onions will sure avoid involuntary crying.
Try it yourself!

I have heard of putting the onion in the frigde before cutting, this makes it less intense. Also i heard that if you put a spoon in your mouth while choppingonions it will keep you from crying. Don't know why,i have yet to try it cause i have a chopper at home that does the chopping for me. But i know if you put your onions in the fridge it helps.

I don't chew anything. After deskinning an onion, I wash it off thoroughly in running water. That helps me for those potent ones, but I've become accustomed to the regular ones.
I've also heard that plugging your nose also helps, but I've never tried it.

Most people recommend bubble gum. But chew with you're mouth closed.
The whole idea is that the chemicals that cause the tears have as few openings as possible to reach you're sinuses.
Also try holding some water in you're mouth.

I have heard it helps to put a toothpick in your mouth while chopping them.
I use a "handy chopper" that I got at Walmart, it's fast and does a great job.
