Beacuse the government make a profit from cigarettes, around 70% of the cost of a packet of ciggies is tax, therefore this far outweighs any cost implication that the Health Serivce have to fork out to treat smokers who become ill through smoking and the government are left with a big fat wedge of cash.

Smoking will never be banned and factories will never be shut down while people are getting RICH from it.
Sad but true :-(

If half the smoking population stopped smoking, that might put some manufacturer's out of business, but that is very doubtful. I watched a young lad cross the road the other day, must have only been about 11, and he lit a cigarette up, and I think he thought he looked the Bee's Knee's. (Pathetic).

All I can say, if you smoke, YOU SMELL, just like the advert portrays.

Sorry, no offence to anyone, its just not nice, especially if you are a non smoker, like myself.

by shutting down the factories that would be taking away peoples freedom of choice, people choice to smoke others don't which why there has been an out right smoking ban in all public places in Scotland, in England it is slightly different i'm not sure about the differences though

Well... there is a simple answer to that good question:
Money.

You have to know, first of all, that these factories are unfortunately, legal. They are managed according to the rules of countries they work in. On top of that, their profits are extremely high. Thus, they provide a working place for thousands (if not millions) of workers, Including good lawyers to protect them.
These corporations are wealthy and have contacts all over the world.
The fuel industry is in the same situation. Whoever sells fuel is so rich that his factory can pay mechanics, for example to make cars that use fuel instead of cars that work on electricity (better for our environment). So it all comes down to money, I'm afraid, and that is your answer.

i do agree but it goes far beyond that. you have so many that are addicted to cigarettes well nicotine youd have a riot. that would be like shuttin down the chocolate factory from all us overweight folks cause it is bad for us. self discipline is the best way then once they have an accurate preventative option that everyone can benefit from then they can burn em well shut them all down cause you figure they will be all up in smoke and we will have a bad case of second hand smoke

Cos the government gets so much money from the tax on cigarettes they wouldn't have enough money to run the country.
