fui = I went - a complete past action
iba = I was going (or) I used to go
(something that I WAS doing)

As they have already mentioned, it has to do with the verbal aspect. "Fui" is the perferct, and "iba" is the imperfect.
Just be careful, as "fui" can also be the past form (perfect aspect as well) of the verb "ser".

"Fui" a completed past actio that does not refer to duration. "Iba" refers to the past with a comparable duration. I went to London. Fui a Londres. "When I was going to London, I suddenly realised all that" Cuando iba a Londres (durante my trayecto a...), me di cuenta (me percaté) de todo eso.
The action of iba, venÃa, hablaba, etc. is not finished when the other action happened.
Does it make any sense?
I was watching tv when the telephone rang. "Estaba" viendo la tele cuando sonó el teléfono.

fui = means when the subject completed the action in the verb "ir" at some place or point
iba= means the subject moving from one point to another
