Am driving up to Glasgow from London with 5mth old baby, anyone know any places off the M6/M40 that are good for short breaks. Don't want the motorway service stations please but places just off motorway (max 15mins drive) that are quiet, chance to feed/change baby etc.

On the M6 just past Shap there's a motorway service area called Westmorland. It's the best one on the motorway network in UK, not like the 'chains' such as Moto or Little Chef. You gotta try it!

Junction 21, come off M6 onto the M62, go along for 2 minutes until you get to the services - go past that and come off at Warrington, if you take the first turn toward Gemini Retail park that will take you to Marks and Spencer and Ikea, Next and Boots, also got McDonalds, so depending on how you are feeling you could sit in M&S and have a cuppa and a sandwich, change the baby, get a burger and fries or just grab something at Boots.

Moffet is a nice little market town just off the M6 about an hour and a half from Glasgow if you want a breather. Lots of parking in the main square and little tea and sweetie shops. Good if you want a rest from the motorway.

Try Penrith just off the M6 north of Shap. Country town. Interesting.
