How about Bath?
If you like history, they do free walking tours of the city with really knowledgable guides, the Roman baths are fascinating and afternoon tea in the Pump Room is an experience. There are good shops and restaurants as well. The new spa is open in the city centre if you want to really relax, and there's plenty of other things to do in the area.

Anywhere in South Wales would be great for a weekend away. It's beautiful round there. But i agree with others, York is one of the best cities to go to for a break. There are lots of good bars and restaurants and some brilliant tourist attractions. The view from the top of the Minster is amazing and it's not too far from London. Only a couple of hours by train... which reminds me. York has one of the biggest and best rail museums in the world. It's lovely place.

Manchester is just 2.5 hours from London, and it's the most wonderful, magical place South of the Borders. Well, apart from Liverpool of course. I can thoroughly recommend Mancester though, as I'm going there myself next week. And you won't believe how excited I am with that idea! From what I've heard about it, it's vibrant, warm, gorgeous and fun even on weekdays. London also has a good reputation, of course, but it's much too large to take in.

1 hr from London is the party town of Belfast! Fly in for about the same price as a 1hr train ride and try out some great pubs, clubs, music, comedy, theatre or even beautiful scenery, fishing, horse riding or pretty much whatever takes your fancy. Come on over and enjoy the craic!

I'd heartily suggest that the extra hours traveling required to visit Scotland, from London or any other city, would be more than worth the haul. I would be overjoyed to visit Edinburgh, if I didn't have a great reason to stay put and wait in Manchester next week...x

The New Forest !!
Only about 2hrs drive, from London, down the M3. Lots of lovely B&B's or hotels, or even camping and secluded shallets.
Lots of lovely old fasioned pubs and stuff like that and you can be as active (horse riding, cycling) or as in-active (long slow forest walks) as you like.
Lovely for 1 or 2 days or even for a week should you choose.

Devon is good..... You have some beaches (yes I read your question and realise it may be cold but most of the attractions will still be open if you want to do that), but you also have 2 wonderful moores to explore, along with the tin mining that went on..... there is loads to do and see

Come to Newcastle - we've always had a great time when we go to Geordie land - great nightlife, shops, people, places to eat and pubs. I live in Scotland just outside Glasgow and always feel very much at home and safe when I visit Newcastle, go and give yourself a treat.
