How does one qualify the relative virtues of sin? How is someone who tortures and dismembers a human being equal in the eyes of God as someone who masturbates? In my religion masturbation is a sin, and all sins are equal. Do masturbators deserve the same cell block under the Lake of Fire as blood-thirsty pederasts?

The is something to be said for 'haute cuisine' upon occasion, but give me good old-fashioned meat loaf and smashed potatoes most any day.

All sins are not equal just like different angles will give you different sine values.
Seriously though certain religions classify sin and I've found that how bad a sin you've commited is often directly proportional to how guilt-ridden you feel.
In religions like Buddhism, certain sins will affect you in this lifetime whereas some will take effect when a suitable oppurtunity for penance occurs(in this life or the next, or the next or the n th), other worse sins can affect you thousands of time over in as many lives. Some will make you be reborn as beasts, or beings not in control of their destiny. Some will have you be reborn in different worlds, alternate planes that are hells to be defined.
And no masturbation is not a sin.
