it does kill bacteria but it also helps draw out the water and fluids built up in the back of your throat.

It's an anti-septic. That's why in "days of old" when sailors where whipped on a ship and were bleeding, salt was put on their cuts, and that's where the saying "Rubbing salt into the wound" comes from.

It's a disinfectant. It's also good for bad breath after garlic etc. and you can brush your teeth with salt if you run out of paste. But don't drink saltwater, it'll make you sick; just gargle and spit it out.
Another tip: after cleaning fish, onions or anything smelly, scrub wet hands with salt and the smell will go.
