Im sitting here and my heart felt like it just fluttered, it did it so hard that it made me feel dizzy for a second or 2...and it wasn't just a quik flutter or skipped beat, it felt as if it stopped beating for 2 or 3 FULL seconds, then GOOSH, pumping again then it eased and felt normal....what just happened and why do you think??? If it gets any worse, I will abviously get urgent care right away. Im not too worried at this time. I only get these feelings maybe once a month and NO it has nothing to do with my menstral cycle. MANY people have palpitations, I am 40 and have had them for 16 years. Everyone who experiences them should be checked by a doctor - however, so often they are benign and they happen even if your heart is normal and healthy. If you want to ease your mind see your doctor and get an echocardiogram and if you want to capture them so that they can tell you exactly what you are experiencing you can wear a holter monitor overnight or an event monitor if they are less frequent.

Exercise, believe it or not, does help reduce the frequency. I have had recent episodes where they have continued for 20 to 30 minutes and one episode that continued every other beat for 4 hours. Consider yourself very lucky for once a month. For most people they are harmless, even though it doesn't feel that way when you are having them. If they become more frequent you can take beta-blockers such as Corgard - as an example - or calcium blockers to help reduce frequency and lessen the hard sensation that can occur for some people. Although if you are having them only once a month you may not want to consider medication unless they became more frequent. Some of these medications can take some getting used to and you may want to hold off if they are that infrequent.

More than likely what you are experiencing are Premature Ventricular Contractions, which is what I have and your description is spot on as to what I have experienced. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are premature heartbeats originating from the ventricles of the heart. PVCs are premature because they occur before the regular heartbeat. During a premature ventricular contraction, the ventricle electrically discharges (and contracts) prematurely before the normal electrical discharges arrive from the SA node. Immediately after a premature ventricular contraction, the electrical system of the heart resets. This resetting causes a brief pause in heartbeat, and many people report feeling the heart briefly stopping after a premature ventricular contraction. Your heart is not stopping, it just FEELS that way.

Check it out by getting an echo and also blood tests to check for electrolyte imbalances and thyroid function etc. to rule out other causes. Also, avoid triggers for palpitations such as caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and certain medications. Stress also can cause them as well as make them worse when they occur.

More than likely, you will find out that like so many of us you just have an electrical irritability that is very annoying, but harmless.

Even if it is palpitations you need to find out why it is doing this. It could be far more serious so you should seek advice from a doctor. There are a number of reasons you can be doing this from heart murmurs to something far more serious. Seek help now and good luck!
