I recommend standby if you are going to use it continuously. Originally, when computers turned on, the electric charge could damage their circuitary, but now all computers are kept on, at a very low level of power, even if you think it's off.
Back to the point though, if you're going to be leaving it for only a small period of time, standbye, if it is an hour or more, then I would turn it off.

I would leave it on standby for only a few hours a day. But be careful, the fan will be on in the cpu...not sure how fast it will wear out.
You can get to hibernate mode by runing the mouse over standby while holding the "shift" key.
When you come back from hiberate mode, you will be where you left off in your computer activity.

Standby is a good Idea if you will not be gone for an extended time. In standby the computers cooling fan stays on so the fan may wear out faster.

Stand by is like pausing the computer, while shut down is better because it installs some updates if it is Windows XP plus if the computer performed poorly for a unknown reason, when you reboot it could perform better.

Standby is better, and if you don't want to see the blinking light, then use hybernate.

turning off the computer brings bad sectors in the harddisk.for this you may hibernate if you want to switch on the pc in 12 hours, and for 2-5 hours you may use standby

I leave my computer on all day and I just turn off the monitor. For my laptop I use standby mode unless I am traveling.

This depends on how well placed your box is. If it gets plenty of ventilation, just leave it on. If it tends to get hot, enable Hibernation.
