As a 21 year old who voluntary joined the territorial Army I’d be in favour of national service in these times. This era, more than any other needs it. Those who are abusive will be on the receiving end; many won’t be able to handle it, but they’ll have no choice and they‘ll be coming out the other side more in control and more civil and will be beneficial to the community as a whole rather than a hindrance. It will instil confidence, pride a sense of nationality. It could go a long way to solving many of the social issues England faces. The only downside to the army at this particular moment is that you can’t pick your wars and we’re currently fighting a war that isn’t about the people.
To get any kind of support the first step is to raise awareness, ask your neighbours, go to areas that suffer from particularly yobbish behaviour I’m sure they’ll snap your hand off for information. Attempt to get the support of your surrounding and local MPs who without you’ll struggle to go further.

Don't come up with the argument that those who don't want to go in would be no good, National Service soon knocked that attitude out of them in the past. As to the present, perhaps if some of the immigrant population were to be enlisted in the forces alongside our own men and women, they wouldn't be so willing to kill their own kind if sent abroad and so there wouldn't be the NEED to send them abroad to fight and get injured and killed. Equally, all the street corner yobboes, muggers, robbers and dealers would find a whole new way of life given some serious discipline instead of the usual slap on the wrist. Oh, and don't worry about the costs - they only need some cheap billets built for use as accommodation whilst in training, the food won't cost much, and they would only get a maximum of a fiver a week as pocket money until they passed-out as a fully fledged serviceman. It worked in the past, like it or lump it.
That way we rid the streets of the young criminal element (tough luck on the half-a-dozen who aren't, but it never worried the authorities in the past) and get a full-sized fighting fit armed service, and when the rest of the world hear about that, they might JUST think twice about starting any more wars.
Unfortunately, it'll never happen, because the same sort of people who will now report me for stating the obvious will protest should the government ever attempt to bring back National Service.

First of all can't force the government to do something, to make matters worse by yourself, you need to follow some protocol, that is why local /ward councilors,MPS are put in place,if after doing so you feel nothing has been done by your MPS,place a public petition and see what response you get from the entire public,,in the end you might even set up a public debt over the same issue...try it you might get your satisifaction....remember to follow the right channel..

Ooh yeas, what a grand idea. Especially for the violent ones with ADH or psychological problems. What we need to do is round up all the potentially violent and unstable people we can find, subject them to a year or two of a regime that encoourages violence, give them access to weapns, train them how to kill efficiently and then release them back into the community.
Brilliant.
While we're at it we could bring back hanging for all those water tight cases we have - you know, where it doesn't turn out that the CPS and judge were incompetent and the jury was acting on prejudices ten years later... oops, sorry, got that one wrong...

You can't force the government to do anything but if there are enough other people who agree with you, then you can make use of the democratic process to re-establish national service. I think it would have its benefits.

Personally, I think National Service is a great idea. Problem - The majority of our young people are Liberal Tree huggers. They view any form of military action "cruel," and "evil." I don't want to see a bunch of people who are protecting ME (soon to enlist in the Corps) while holding peace signs, love signs, etc walking down the streets in raq, getting picked off by snipers.

Ahh yes, I can just imagine it. Some thick, drugged up scumbag crying his eyes out as a drill sgt is screaming in his ear.
It wouldn`t work, if they are like the young kids where I live - all they do is swear, drink cider/lager, smoke, and that`s the 12 year olds! The older ones are even worse.
And as for the police? they are a joke round here and a waste of space.........:-) :-)

You could start by enlisting yourself so that you could feel the full delight of being shipped off to Iraq or Afghanistan to be shot at, blown up or just generally f**ked up for the rest of YOUR life, then having experienced what you propose to subject others to, you could start a campaign to bring it in for all of our talented youth, what a waste!
You are talking about a perceived lack of discipline, the forces don't want troops that don't want to be there anymore than those you plan to enlist.
If discipline is your problem, efforts need to be made to resolve THIS problem, not start a whole bucket load of NEW problems!

If it is not a government initiative you have to get enough people to go and petition you local MP and he will put it forward as a question in the House thats the start.

We can't even FORCE the Government to get a copper round to your house if you're burgled! How do you think they'd handle something like conscription?
I thinks it's a good idea - ask any Israeli - but we just wouldn't manage it logistically!
