It is highly unlikely that we will ever be able to transport more than a handful of people to other planets. It is even more unlikely that they will be able to live independent lives when they get there. For instance, Mars has almost no atmosphere. Venus' would burn your skin off.

None. Or nearly none. The Moon, Mars and all the other planets are way worse places than Earth, even Earth after a nuclear war or a large asteroid impact. At least Earth has oxygen in the atmosphere. The Moon has no atmosphere at all, and Mars has an atmosphere with no oxygen. Anyway, Mars' atmosphere is too thin to survive without a space suit even if it had oxygen. There is more radiation on the Moon and Mars than there is in Chernobyl today! The only way people could live there is underground or in hermetically sealed, radiation shielded artificial environments. You could do that on Earth if the environment got really bad.
