I got it, this has to be well planned and include the parents and maybe a trust worthy friend, as well as the school they attend.

Take a well loved student and over the weekend allow false news of the person driving home and being hit by a drunk driver and dying (that was also a person about the same age).
Monday rolls around and you have hysterical kids. Have an assembly and discuss drunk driving and it's affects. Pull the kid out and yell gotcha!

really mean, but no one would forget the feeling of their heart racing into their shoes at the news . . .

I was charged for drink driving.

As part of my punishment, I was forced to attend a "responsible drivers" education program designed for first time offenders of driving related crimes.

Each week the program was presented by a different person/people - The police, families of people killed by drink drivers, people with disabilities caused by drink drivers, St Johns Ambulance, or other specialists.

While all the facts and statistics had already been made clear before the offence was made, this course faced us with graphic, first hand descriptions and re-tellings of tragic events and their effects on the community - the police officer who is first at the scene of a fatal accident; the fire fighter who must cut through the wreckage to pull out any injured people; the injured person who will never live the life they wanted; the family members who are forced to provide 24 hour care to their once able loved ones..

For whatever reason (be it guilt, fear, a better understanding, etc), I am pleased to say that I have not driven while under the influence again.

In my opinion, a similar course should be compulsory for all learner drivers. I'm not a statistics person so the first hand, in your face structure of the course had a huge impact on me.

But thats just my opinion...

Cheers!
