more painful than regular blood donations?

If you have donated whole blood it is very similar. The process called Aphereeses(didn't spell it right) you have two needles hooked up in to you, one in each arm. The blood is taken in to a machine, filtered and put back in. It is time consuming, I think about hour or so process. I attempted this once but found out I'm allergic to the anti-coagulants to keep you from clotting. It chills the blood a bit so it can make you cold, which is slightly unpleasant. Overall for most people it is a painless process, and the benefit is priceless.

hi! i'm a medical technologist.. there are too many people who donate blood everyday and i can see that because i was once working in a blood bank.. ;)
eniwei, if u donate blood plasma, it is actually altogether with the red blood that u see if u have a wound, etc.. and it's not painful actually..
there is this technology in this medical field where the medical technologist can extract only the blood component which is not needed.. its called an "apheresis". if not whole blood is needed, for example plasma is the only component needed, then there is what u call "plasmapheresis" where the rest of the blood components will be withrawn from u, then plasma will be separated, then the other components like "red blood cells", "white blood cells" will be back in your system.. ;)
it's not painful though, it will make u dizzy for some time.. i think for minutes only.. ;)

No, it is two needle sticks instead of one. But the good you do will go on. Plus I always feel better after I donate blood.

Not really, but it does take a lot more time. So if you're fear is having a needle inside you, then chances are, the experience might be a bit more frightful since the extended period can be more harrowing.
