Different colors of feathers are for attracting the females. The prettier the better.
As for size of feathers, they vary is every species of bird - basically to give them the aerodynamics of flight.

Like most species, they split up over time into different areas. They develop differences due to the foods available in that region. LET'S SAY A BIRD IS YELLOW, that area may contain more carotene in the plants. Over time what was once a genetic Oops is now become the nom., IE: Nandy vs Sun conure. It also helps them see their own flock at a distance or spot their mates.
It's all about Location, and what the food contains. Like the Timnah Vs the Congo.

Male birds have richer, deeper colors than females. This is for mating purposes. Brightly colored males are more alluring to female birds, increasing their chance to breed and produce offspring. The size of feathers are for the purposes of flying, and to intimidate other species from harming them. Birds increase their wing span, and fluff their feather so as to appear larger, thus creating the illusion of size to intimidate prey.

Birds have feathers of different sizes and shapes because the different feathers perform different functions-
a. down feathers: soft andd fluffy to insulate
b. conour feathers: short, round and smooth to cover the down and smooth and give aerodynamic shape to the body... they also repell water and wind.
c. flight feathers: long and stiff to prodive lift when flapping the wings
d. tail feathers: symetrical, broad and stiff to act as a rudder during flight.
Even flightless birds have the same types of feather shapes- all birds are variations on one basic design.
As for colors- birds have different colored feathers for different reasons: to camoflage themselves and blend in, to stand out and get a mate by showing off how healthy they are (brighter colors = better health) and to fool predators (for example, birds that have "eyes" on their wings.)

Most birds are colored to match the environment they live in, so they can blend in and be camouflaged if necessary. Males are usually more colorful and bright as they need to attract a female in the spring for breeding. Most males have a "breeding plumage" when there color is the most vibrant, and a "winter plumage" when they are more drab.
