I sort of have the same problem. I started using McAfee on my computer it has booted slowly ever since. I am going to purchase a new security system. I had Norton before and it worked perfectly and didn't make me manually update things all of the time!

Your McAfee is slowing down the sys. U can better remove it and try quick-heal/AVG free with some spyware doctor.
U can also-
-check if too much prog. are installed. Keep only necessary progs on your C:\.
-Increase RAM capacity,
-Use XP-Prof with SP2, not media center or vista pack,
-Degrade visuals and themes to 'for best performance' option.
-Remove as many icons from desktop as possible,
-Use small fonts in icons, keep resolutions to 600x800
-Avoide installing games/movie clips/musics/wallpapers etc. in C:\.
I think it could help u. If not, then format with XP bootable cd and reinstall in a fresh way. And keep as much space possible free in your C:\
