Pilate had to send Jesus to the cross in order for Jesus to be a martyr, also he gave the choice to the people to either set Jesus free or Barrabas free. He didn't seem to really want to crucify Jesus, he held him in contempt but I'm just really curious as to why exactly is it that he is damned.

NO Pilate did not send Jesus to the Cross. He found nothing in his testimony that would warrant such an action and washed his hands of the whole thing and let the people who were gathered around the place of judgment to decide whether Jesus or Barabbas would be set free as it was a holy day were one of the condemned could be set free.Barabbas's people along with the RABBIS that feared Jesus teaching made the most noise and Barabbas was set free.
So Pilate was not dammed or blamed for Jesus death.

Pilate washed his hands of Jesus' death. If you've ver seen the Passion of the Christ, Pilate washed his hands ain front of everybody, and said that the blood was on their hands. He didn't give the order, he basically handed Jesus over them to do as he wishes. He was never damned.
The teaching you have recieved is one of many erroneous teachings in the catholic church. for example, where in the bible does it say you have to be ocnfirmed in the first place?
I used to be a catholic too, and I was also confirmed. But the more i learned about the teachings of the catholic church, the more I realized many of them do not line up with the bible. I have since left the cathlic church and joined another Holy Spirit filled church, and am now a misisonary in Asia. I'm not saying this is for oyu, I'm just saying look a littel deeper into what you're getting yourself into. God bless.

Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judaea, incurred the enmity of Jews by insulting their religious sensibilties when he had coins bearing pagan religious symbols minted. The Jews may have capitalized on his vulnerability by obtaining a legal death sentence on Jesus. Following the advice of the high priest Caiaphas, Pontius Pilate, ordered the crucifixion of Jesus in Jerusalem. A few years later Pilate was ordered back to Rome to stand trial on the charge that he executed men without proper trial. Pilate may have killed himself on orders from Emperor Caligula.
He may be but not for the execution of Christ!

He had a llot of power and really there was not a choice. Say if the people had said "yes we want Jesus alive", then Pilate would have said "right I will kill the lot of you"

Contemplating whether a character out of a flawed, man-made book is damned, seems silly to me.

Pilate's problem is that he asked "What is truth?" as if there were no answer, and he washed his hands of a problem that his hands were directly involved in.
That is, he was wishy-washy and faithless, and he did not understand personal accountability. Not uncommon for a politician to follow what the mob says instead of stand for something true.
