This is my territory!
Not only have I had problems with constipation in my life, but also I have two kids who have the same problem! My mom, too!
Anyway, there are several things you need to do:
(1) Drink LOTS of water. Add some fruit juice, especially prune if you like it, but grape or cherry will do, as well. Look for juices with high fruit content. Avoid sugary carbonated drinks, but sparkling mineral water is good, especially if it has a high magnesium content.
(2) Eat fruit, vegetables. Fruit that can contribute to constipation is the banana. Good choices are plums, berries, apples. Dried fruits are great. Carrots can sometimes contribute to constipation, so try not to eat too many (but don't avoid them altogether).
(3) Probiotics. Eat or drink yogurt with live bacteria. Danone Activia is a good choice. Add some toasted wheat germ for a nutty texture and taste and extra fibre.
(4) Avoid processed foods and anything white. That means have brown rice, not white, whole wheat pasta instead of the regular semolina kind, whole grain bread. Look for foods with wheat and oat bran in them, and if you do your own baking, substitute the white flour with whole grain flour mixed with bran. Add dried fruits like raisins or dried blueberries or cranberries. Bran flakes make a good breakfast choice as well as a good ingredient in your cookies or muffins.
(5) BEANS.
(6) Exercise. More movement from you will get more movement from your bowels!
(7) Don't strain on the toilet. Constipation and the pushing that usually ensues can lead to hemmorhoids. You don't want those!
(8) If all else fails, very OCCASIONALLY use a laxative. Exlax is our choice, but it should be used as a last resort. A different choice is a glycerine suppository (safe in pregnancy and while nursing). Also, if you are taking any supplements, they could interfere with your natural digestion. (Iron supplements are notorious for their constipating traits.)
Anyway, I hope this helps. Beating constipation means making some lifestyle changes. It may be difficult in the beginning, but it's worth it! And you'll be healthier, too!

First thing: drink plenty of water..I mean, 6-8 glasses per day--this is the BEST way of preventing constipation;
Second: eat fiber!!!...fruits, vegetables and whole grains;
Third: excercise..walking everyday for 30 minutes can do wonders!
All of the above will help keep you from getting stopped up and be careful about taking laxatives because eventually you will become dependent on them. If you do take fiber-tabs, MAKE SURE YOU DRINK LOTS OF WATER WITH THEM...(they could actually swell up in your throat and cause an obstruction!) Good luck!

Ouchie.
Try prune juice, or a laxative such as Dulcolax. If it doesnt help, and goes on for too long, see a doctor!
