I can believe that Christianity has more than its fair share of bad people, attracted by the Christian promises of easy forgiveness and everlasting life. But I find it impossible to accept that all Christians are bad, or that even a majority of them is.

The classic Christian response to this is that they are all sinners because they commit a sin every time they comfort eat, or think about sex. But doesn't this completely devalue the entire notion of sin and wickedness, placing eating a donut on the same level as raping and murdering a child?

Why should the actions of a child rapist or mass murderer be as easily forgiven as the completely natural act of feeling sexual arousal, which in most people's book isn't a voluntary action, let alone a bad one?

So, unless you are one of the minority of psychopaths among us, liberate yourself from sin and start believing you are a decent, honest person who has been manipulated by a bunch of unscrupulous control freaks.

Yes. There is no sin or morality.

There is only right and wrong. Harm or don't harm.

Is it possible that you have been brainwashed into thinking there can be no sin?

Your right in some of your points. There are varying degrees of sin, but all sin is abhorent to God. Child rape is a very serious sin and not easilly forgiven. I don't see how pigging out on donuts is a sin, but it does show a lack of self control. Paying lip service to God will not gain us forgiveness for our sins as some believe. Forgiveness requires a genuine change of heart, recompense for the damage caused by the sin and a genuine commitment to never repeat the sin again. It is very difficult for a child molester to gain forgiveness because it is almost impossible for them to rectify the emotional damage they have caused their victim.

Feeling aroused by the presence of a beautiful woman is not a sin. However, entertaining lustful thoughts about her, undressing her in your mind and imagining what it would be like to have sex with her is a sin. A major purpose of this life is for our spiritual selves to gain mastery over our physical bodies. That means controlling our desires and appetites within appropriate bounds. Sex is totally appropriate within the bonds of marriage and helps to strengthen and cement the bond.

I do believe that sin and moral came from humanity itself.

To be specific, it was the after thought of victims which caused the emergence of conscience from the human minds. Eg. if the meal of an ancient man were robbed or stolen, wouldn't he feel something while he starved for that day? Wouldn't events like injuries or deaths also cause some bad reactions while daily life of a man was severely affected? Wouldn't a rape or violent assault cause some hurtful feelings in the victim's mind?

In ancient society, religions and its authority of "God" were up held to explain moral and sin just like a modern day judicial system. Clearly religions were laws to control behaviors of society -- the people.

The only problem is that religions when interpreted did not always get things right. How could religions be perfect regarding laws of society? Especially when sophisticated law systems like ours are still failing us frequently.

A person by the name of SYLVIA BROWNE once said in regards to your question { People are always asking me; Why don't I have a better opinion of myself" Why do I feel off track" and am I a bad person" In the first place,on a really logical note, bad people, or those who are off track, dont care and would never ask these questions. they seem unconcernedwith such thoughtsand are truly convinced they're justified in whatever action they take..... Wrong or right; good people are always subject to guilt and worry. Why, you may ask? easy because good souls monitor themselves and have a built in alarm system that keeps them on track. we've been raised on guilt and expectations of others to such an extent that sometimes we feel as if we don't even know who we really know who we are. We may even forget about free will and act in ways that correspond with what others have chosenfor us, so much of our lives fall into this pit ofdeterminism. this is a phenomenon that works on a small scale as well as a large one,and it operates on the physical, emotional, and even a soul level.. Of course we might think that all christians are brainwashed into beleiving this, although it isn't true Read the book by Sylvia it's called, LESSONS FOR LIFE.... I think if your thinking like that, you will enjoy knowing the trueth... your christian freind Bryan...

The beauty of living in an environment of shifting moralities is as long as you can stand on the right side of a bell curve your a good person. As someone wrote about a Muslim friend thinking it ok to lie that is because that is not a 'real' sin in Islam. I know someone (not a Christian) who was having a panic attack over accidental saying something out of turn. The sons of Sadam Hussen regularly committed horrible acts, yet in their environment with the friends they had, they might well have been able to say I'm a good person because all the people I know do much worse.

If we say we are a sinner or not by what scale are we measuring yourself??

A lot of non believers brainwash themselves into believing there isn't sin.but you've been hanging out with some misinformed Christians. If you just think something it is not sin.The sin is the act of doing something.Who ever told you eating a donut is a sin doesn't know what they are talking about. It can lead to gluttony but its not a sin to just eat one.Sounds like a weight watchers cult.If you are looking through the bible just to point out what you disagree with then you are being very closed minded.I challenge you to check both sides to the issue before you base an opinion.

A true Christian experiences true freedom, and is not under anyone's control.

Those who look for sin where none exists, or who fail to see sin when it abounds are equally delusional.

One of the primary purposes of the church is to maintain a clear "gold standard" of behavior, as illustrated in the person of Jesus Christ.

Another purpose is to provide the necessary education and resources to enable people to apply those godly standards to their own lives.

Once again, the end result is true freedom. Not control.

Sin has the power to enslave and control. God is in the freedom business.

You have it backwards.

Thinking you are good enough that you can go to heaven without being saved ,is a wrong way to look at this,Jesus died for us to cover our sins, instead of like they did in the old testament, they killed a spotless animal,Jesus was spotless and he was killed for our sins sake,so now if you believe this you will go to heaven, because your sins have been forgiven of you,our problem is that we have gotten so advanced that we just don't see the purpose of something unless you can run it through a computer or,put it under a microscope, and this is not going to work that way, some people have become so educated, that they have lost all common sense, and can't think for them self unless some professor has told them its true ,then they will believe it,just like a cow being lead to the slander, not a brain cell under your own control in your head, and then ya'll call us brainwashed ,most of you have never been in a church much less read the bible, and if you didn't understand it you threw it down saying it was stupid, how can you investagate anything without thoroughly investigating all the fact on both sides, you people only look at one side, and try and make others feel stupid for believing something you haven 't any knowledge of at all, that's not a very scientific investigation....is it?

there is no greater sin, which means all sin is equal. eating a donut to me is not a sin. but to live a sin free life is totally impossible and that is y there is death. however to be forgiven of a sin, u have to really be sorry and try not to again. if every1 tried to live that lifestyle this world would be a much more peacefull place, dont u think?
