I think you have to define "jet" as scram jet isn't the traditional turbine powerplant most think you are looking for the answer to. The Space shuttle is of course fastest aircraft at Mach 25. Before that it was the X-15 at Mach 6.72. The Scram jet is about Mach 9.6 but unmanned. In the Turbine (Axial turbine engines) category the fastest sustained flights are all by the SR-71 at a Mach 3.2 and could hit a burst speed of Mach 3.3. Most other aircraft are listed at their peak speed and not sustained. The Mig 25 fighter could sprint to Mach 2.9 but only for a few minutes and usually destroyed or permanently damaged the engines in doing so. A great fast flyer history forgot was the XB-70. Much larger than the SR-71 with ample payload area and could still reach Mach 3.1 for up to 60 minutes.

There are many answers to this question. I beleive at the time the X-43 scram jet is the fastest. Although each time the speed record has been broken in the past the SR-71 has rebroken it. It is pulled from retirement and tested again. From what I understand the SR has never been pushed to its real limits just to see how fast it actually goes. So you watch and soon the SR will come out again and recapture its title.

The fastest authentic % is going to the SR-seventy one, mach 3.31. The Mig-31 is an as a lot as date spinoff of the Mig-25, and is honestly a splash slower than the 25's authentic % of three.2 For acceleration, if I had to wager it would want to be the F-15, or probably the Su-27

The Lockheed Martin Blackbird is a military jet that cruises about 80,000 feet up. It travels around 2200 miles an hour. It is a stealth plane that was retired from service I believe in 1974.
All these people that say the concorde are dumb, considering it only went half the speed of the Blackbird.

It's Official. X-43A Raises the Bar to Mach 9.6
Guinness World Records recognized NASA's X-43A scramjet with a new world speed record for a jet-powered aircraft - Mach 9.6, or nearly 7,000 mph. The X-43A set the new mark and broke its own world record on its third and final flight on Nov. 16, 2004.
