Deism was popular back around the time of the Founding Fathers, some of whom were Deists. It was a time when they began to think that God didn't intervene much in the world to prevent evil, yet they still felt there had to be a God to create the universe. So they came up with Deism, which conceived of a remote God who didn't really involve himself in Man's business, but who was like a clockmaker, who made the clock (earth and the universe), wound it up, then wandered off somewhere while the clock kept on ticking...

In particular, they deny that God has ever revealed himself to Man, so they deny the Bible, the Koran, and any other such books. But unlike atheists, they believe a creator God exists, and think that fact is demonstrated by simply observing nature.

Deism is the belief in one God but not as defined by any religion. Deists have no dogma, no reason to witness. Their belief is based on the observation of Nature.

That probably comes closest to what I would believe but because I cannot prove that any god exists I am in the agnostic camp and perfectly happy with that.

Thomas Paine's Age of Reason is an excellent book that rips apart Christianity...I love the book.

Lastly, there is much debate regarding our founding fathers beliefs and whether or not they were deists or christians. Proofs can be given from both sides.

Deism is the philosophy that there is in fact a god, but that it created the universe, set it down, and walked away, never to be seen from or heard from again.

A deist, for example, denies prophecy, denies any form of messiah or avatar, and denies scripture. These are actions of a personal god, and deism does not believe in personal deity.

And maria, careful there pretty little lady... not everyone here is a theist. I'm atheist and proud of it.

Well if there is a goddess then I am a sheist. A deist is just one who believes in the deity or maybe in many deities, such as the Christian god.
