The flu is a virus, new ones seem to come every year, usually starting in Asia somewhere and making their way here. Flu season is from October to March and there are flu vaccines, however, most of the time they are only effective against the flu that was here last year, or something they get it right and guess which flu will be here this year but they never know for sure. Usually flu comes on quickly where you feel tremendously crappy, there is usually a high fever, a bone rattling cough and you are usually unable to get out and about, you are pretty much just comatose in bed. Good news is, the flu is usually over within a week, however, you still feel weak afterwards.

A cold is also a virus, it's said there are hundreds of different viruses that cause colds. Colds usually come on more slowly with scratchy throat then sore throat then congestion that moves from the nose downward. Usually no fever or a lower fever than the flu. You usually feel ok and symptoms can be controlled with cold medications and you can still get out and work, play, etc. Colds can last several weeks with the cough hanging on for several weeks afterwards although if you still have a cough at that point, you should check and see if it's turned into bronchitis.

Fever is not an illness, it's a symptom of an illness. Fever can indicate many different things.

fever is when your temp is above 98.6*. A cold is when you do not have a fever but you have become overloaded with mucus and so your coughing and sneezing and all that crap. The flu is when you have both a cold and a fever and add a little bit of up chucking.
