The absolute best place to celebrate the winter solstice is in Sedona, Arizona. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, with the least number of hours of sunlight in a 24-hour period. It will occur Dec. 21, 2006. The winter solstice ceremony is a celebration of the return of the light. Daylight hours become longer after the winter solstice.

Supposedly, seven years from today on the Winter Solstice of 2012 ‑ at exactly 11:11 UT a cosmic portal will open in Sedona Arizona. Sedona, Arizona is said to have many vortexes.

It is most commonly celebrated by Neopagans/Wiccans. You will have no trouble finding a group online that will be holding a celebration and they are quite beautiful and moving.

I myself am an agnostic humanist. My family celebrates Winter solstice as a way to have tradition without religion. We decorate a live tree in a pot, so that we can plant it later. We "adopt" children for the season and buy presents for the less fortunate or donate to the charity of choice for each other. We light a candle and keep it going all night to welcome the sUn as the days will grow longer from that night on. We eat too much. Laugh and drink alot. We tell stories, play twister, take a moolight walk if possible. We don't carol...we karoke! It's so much fun we do it again at Summer solstice...but we call that "family reunion"...LOL.

Yule (Winter Solstice) is the shortest day of the year, and we celebrate the returning sunlight.

I don't celebrate, nor observe the winter solstice. Instead, I always look forward to the spring thaw.

I always go to Antarctica to enjoy the summer weather there. I can't help you about SW, because I never heard of the place. Sweden? Sewer? I dunno.
