Of the many long-term relationships between couples I know, many have broken up once or twice or given each other space to study abroad, travel long-term or pursue a personal amibition, and still worked out in the long-term. Is that a common thing to happen. I guess I need a little faith here...Have a lovely day!

I have been in the same relationship for 25 years now & I think it is made more successful by the fact that we have different interests.
My partner enjoys Gardening, DIY & is a real home bird. I enjoy Foreign Travel & Driving.
I go on holiday on my own, leaving him at home to do as he wants.

You used the term "worked out in the long term", does this mean finally getting together with a mortgage and possibly a couple of children? Sorry to answer your question with another question, but if your answer is "yes", then a relationship can only be enhanced by the pursuit of separate interests.

My best friend and her husband have been married for 6 years now, both in early 30's. She is a traveller, whilst he would happily never leave his home town - they have struggled but have learned to compromise. She no longer goes off for months, but chooses to take longer holidays - ie 3 weeks in Ghana then in a few months a few more in Asia. She funds it herself by working between times and am sure she'd rather just go off for 6 months at a time, but this is what has made it work for them.

There is a saying that you have to let someone go if you love them, and if they return then you know they love you too.
