I was at bus stop somewhere near my office one day, waiting for my husband to pick me up. While waiting there was this guy with his girlfriend (i guess), waiting for a cab or bus. All of sudden that guy just threw an empty ciggie pack in front of me. Then I looked at him. He just ignore like nothing happen, like he didn't do anything wrong. So what I did was, I pick up the ciggie pack and hand it over to him. I said, 'Excuse me, you drop this.' Then he replied, 'Ya, it's empty!!'. Then I showed him that there's a rubbish bin just a few steps from him and ask him to throw in the bin. So he just grabbed the pack and just throw in the bin (i think he was mad at me!) Then I heard the girlfriend said to me, 'How rude!!' Uh? Am I being rude by telling the boyfriend to throw the pack in the bin? I don't understand!

No, I don't think you were being rude at all. In fact the "lady" and her friend were the rude ones. With a waste bin in the area, there was no reason to litter. The comment made was to cover their embarrassment for being corrected.
I am no expert in etiquette, however growing up in the 1970's and partially by grand parents I could tell you I have seen people corrected in such a manner throughout my life. I probably would have done something similar.

You were not rude, they were rude to you because of their guilt. That is actually quite funny how you pointed out that he dropped the trash on the ground. You were sticking up for a principal and got your point across. They were the ones who were rude by throwing trash on the ground. If more people spoke up when people threw trash on the ground the world would be a cleaner place! Have a good night.

What you done was very noble. But very risky! Their are larger problems that need addressing out there in the big bad world. Being rude in this case is that you put your safety at risk over something that someone who probably has a wife and children to support gets paid to every morning pick up rubbish from the streets. ////////// No theirs good and bad in every thing your on the right path keep it up.

Wrong, no. But less effective, less wise than you could have been. You created a dynamic in which you were 'playing parent' and pushing him into the role of a child being reprimanded and compelled to 'clean up his room' as it were. People will always be resentful if you put them into that situation. Instead, do something that doesn't require any action on their part, but will (one hopes) help them to make better choices in the future. For instance, you could have picked up the litters, said "Excuse me sir, we don't do that here. We do this," and put it into the litter bin for him, as if perhaps he were a well meaning foreigner who sincerely didn't know our ways. You wouldn't shame such a foreigner, but merely point out in a generous way that his action is "out of tune" with what is generally acceptable while showing him the correct action for next time.

He was rude. Keep the world beautiful don't litter...Plus it is illegal to toss litter on the ground. Litter can have many effects on the environment. It is extremely unsightly. If he didn't pick it up who would be stuck doing it for his lazy butt? How lazy have people become these days that they can't walk an extra few steps to throw stuff away? He was lucky it was you that caught him littering & not a cop because they do fine you for first time offenses.

I'm not sure I would call what you did rude, although it was definately bold. The person being rude here is the person who decided to litter. Although personally, if I had already picked up the trash, I would have just thrown it in the garbage myself - I think it would get the same point across.

I don't think you were rude at all. It was disgusting of him to throw a pack of cigarettes towards you, even if it was empty. I would have done the some thing.

No. I applaud you. But you may want to be careful. Some people today can have inappropriately violent reactions to things like that. A guy in our area followed someone who cut him off in traffic and when the guy parked, the other guy got out and shot at him.
