its totally normal. at that age, they dont know how to control theyre emotions. thats why hes all over the place. my son does the same thing, but its usually prompted by not getting something that he wants. it takes TONS of patience to get through it, but it will get better.

He's at tantrum age, but it does sound a little odd to me (unless he's playing with some toy and has something happen with it that isn't what he wants, in which case it would be normal).
I've never known a child (even of that age) to attack whoever is closest to him. Even if his toy upset him for some reason, the usual thing is for them to lay down on the floor and kick and scream or else to even just stand still and cry at the top of their lungs.
Are you sure you're not missing that he's doing something that sets him off (as opposed to other people's doing something that could also set him off). Either you're missing something or else he is a little on the unusual side when it comes to the attacking and biting problem. There's something a little different about it from any kid I've ever seen - even the ones having horrible tantrums.

I cant believe all these people saying its normal!!
Its certainly not normal and he needs to know that its not acceptable. Yes he is pushing his boundarys but you need to stop this now before he gets too much older.
For him to snap suddenly and hurt people on purpose isnt normal.
It may have something to do with his environment at home, or he may have a more serious behavioural problem which should be checked out professionaly.

He's testing the waters trying to find out where his boundary's are & yes, it's normal though some not as bad as others. This behavior is how they learn while developing a sense of independancy. He's also trying to figure out what he can & can not get away with & with who he can or can not do it to.

This is very normal. Putting him in time out for a few minutes it might help. But no worries, he'll grow out of this stage and start something new. good luck!!!
