It will be recognized when the player that plays the extension(DAT) is made the default player for that file type.

Solution 1:In simpler terms,supposing you've got Windows media player,click on tools->options in the player menu and go to File types tab. Now check on DAT if it is found or click on all video formats. Now the DAT file will change to a icon with the windows media symbol.

Solution: 2 Else right click on the DAT file and select properties. Click on open with tab and select windows media player from the list. Now the icon of the DAT file will change to represent windows media.

The same applies to other media players also.

In computers any device will be recognised only if you install the corresponding device driver so you install the device driver for your DAT to the specific operating system you are using and then it will be recognised.
