There is definitely the option of getting the child lock for the door. However, some cats are clever enough to figure that out too! I'd also make sure that you're cutting the handles of the plastic bags so they don't get caught around your kitty's neck anymore. Please DO NOT spray and yell at your cat when you find him laying on the bags. This technique only works if you catch your kitty in the act of getting into the cupboard. Otherwise your kitty may just confused and start rebelling at your odd behavior (which is how it would seem to your kitty). Good luck!

Plastic bag are horribly dangerous for pets and kids. No question you need to get a childlock, or even just use a large rubber band slipped over the drawer handle and the handle for the next drawer above or below it. You can then slide it open to get a bag, but the cat wont be strong enough to resist the rubber band. Make sure the rubber bands sits very firmly on the handles, so it cant get the rubber band off, as it can choke on that - cats love the rubber texture
I used this for my dog who kept opening pantry doors and bedroom drawers for clothes and food to drag into the garden and play with..... amazing the stuff we put up with from our furry children!!

Hi there...although this is so cute, my concern would be the dangers involving accidental injuries (internally as well as externally), which I sense you also wonder about. Would you consider taking a moment to read a few web articles I'm listing to learn more: http://www.natureofanimals.com/PlasticBags.html
http://www.mainecoons.org/h/baghazard.html
Pets, particularly cats can get their heads caught inside plastic bags -- even chip bags. The warnings about not leaving children alone with plastic bags should also be followed with pets. Remember -- your cat has the same judgment as a two year-old child.
I would try consider using childproof safety latches found at any hardware store (e.g. http://www.totsafe.com/products.asp?cat=12) for drawers and cupboards to disuade your kitty from making mischief

My cat also likes sleeping on plastic bags, but I would be really concertned about the shredding, as well as the handles around his neck. Swallowing plastic can be very bad, and so can be a handle that chokes him.
I would say you should keep the plastic bags safer from him. It is cute, and he may like it, but he still may get quite sick, or worse, so don't take chances.

I couldnt come home from the grocery store without putting a bag on the floor for my girl. I have several pictures of her just sitting straight up in the middle like she was a bag of potato chips. Try the paper ones too. Most pet supply shops carry a sack that makes the crinkly sound for the cats that like plastic bags. If you think your cat is bad...you should see what ferrets do....

LOL @ cat! Yes, this sounds like my cat. Yes, definitly get the child lock. that will solve the drawer problem. the reason the bag gets stuck around him is that he was playing in it and he inadvertantly wrapped himself in the handle and is trying to get out. Ususally mine walks herself out and the bag falls off. Mine have never shredded the bags, thankfully because they like to play with and eat odd stuff.

I think it's very cute, but yes there is always a chance of him hurting himself. Get a brown paper grocery sack or box for him to play in. I had a cat once that would run full speed into a tipped-over sack and go sliding across the floor. It was hilarious! My Siamese I have now has a blast with a bread tie when I drop it on the floor, or just wad up a piece of paper. She doesn't play with her cat toys at all!

I would get child locks to put on the cabinet drawers. The bags could suffocate him.
