I am doing research on a short film centered around an interracial couple (Indian girl, black guy) and she takes him home to meet her family. I am just trying to gain some perspective..would this be a disaster? Would a traditional Indian family dissapprove? Why or why not? I don't want to (necessarily) use any sterotypes, I just want to find out the real deal.

Skin color is very important in Asia: the whiter the better since it denotes wealth and education. Also, you might like to touch on the idea that if she marries outside her culture, there will be none of the usual beneficial familial ties that result from intra-cultural marriages.

I hate to use stereotypes too, but depends on the color of the girl -- if she is from South - close to black.... If she is white, from up North... or in the middle.
Anyway - it is a far shot in Indian tradition - will NOT be accepted in all 3 cases above.
If u talk about 1 specific case - nobody can comment on that - there might be an Indian girl giving birth before marriage,,, or working in a blue movie...
We can comment only on trends - and my advise is : Make movie on Social Trends - not on some diverted/perverted ******** individuals - that's a successful movie!!

It also depends on how traditional the girl's parents are. In my experience, most East-Indian families prefer and hope that they're son/daughter will marry someone within their own race/religion. Although is a preference, there are some parents and families who are willing to accept change; however, there are also those who are strictly against such relationships. The range of tolerance is dependent on the family itself, regardless of who it might concern.

Find out how religious they are...every major religion in the world has teachings about mixing religions in marriage...very seldom will you find a reference to mixing races, that's their own prejudice or dislike for the other race(s). You will often find people refer their aversion to other races to their religions, but it comes down to persinal choice. The religions should not be mixed, that's just a recipe for strife in the family.

Watch "Mississippi Masala". I believe it still applies to this day.
