There is this guy that smiles at me and winks at the same time in conversation. I have never been able to wink. If I look in the mirror and make myself wink, I look like an idiot. Can you wink without knowing you are doing it? Or, is it something you have to plan to do?

i need to make an effort to do it. but very rarely, it happens on its own. i hope you are able to wink as and when you want to.

A wink is something you do intentionally, unless you have a facial tic, in which case it could happen involuntarily. (But you would know that if you have it.)

It is something that you do...If you happen to be winking unconsciously, that is usually called a twitch.
