Yes, all dogs except the hairless breeds shed..People do too! but poodles and other dogs hold their shed hair, rather then release it onto surfaces..It turns to matts in their coats if not groomed regularly..there are many breeds that don't shed much, and are considered to be better for people with allergies..Poodles are just one if such breeds.

I have a Toy Poodle and a Poodle/Schnauzer mutt. Many idiots think Poodles are for little old ladies and bark a lot. My Toy Poodle hardly ever barks, and can hold her own with the big dogs. So much for Poodles being sissified. Both of my dogs understand a few signs from sign language. The know Sit, Stay, and are learning lay down and roll over. Many people think you HAVE to have that haircut that I absolutely hate on Poodles. They aren't smart enough to realize you can tell the groomer what you want, or groom the dogs however you want them groomed. As for them being high maintenance with grooming, I keep my dogs in short haircuts, and only brush them once or twice a week if I'm lucky. They get haircuts about every six weeks, and I do them myself.

I've never seen the questions you describe, and I can't imagine why one wouldn't want a poodle. I can't get one because they require more exercise than I can dish out, but they have great temperaments and are among the easiest dogs to train! And like you said, they come in three legitimate sizes! Do you think maybe the people asking those questions you speak of were MEN? Maybe they don't like the look of Poodles, thinking they'll be teased for picking such a "feminine" breed. That's the only reason I can think of.

There are basically two types... dogs who shed like crazy and dogs who require regular haircuts.
The breeds that require haircuts (poodles, yorkies, etc) do not shed in the same way that the others do... their hair gets longer and longer instead of shedding and being replaced.
However, just as humans 'shed' SOME hair, poodles do too.

Poodles do not shed at all. I have a toy poodle, and all of my clothes are perfectly hair free. They're also a very intellgent breed, and extremely easy to train. Famously even tempered, so long as you train them to know that hands are not toys.

I have owned three black Std. Poodles...I still have one. They are a beautiful smart dog and do not shed. They have hair instead of fur and are excellent for people with allergies. Grooming is easy enough to learn to do on your own. Especially important to pluck hair out of ear channels. Best to keep them in a maintanance cut. I keep mine with a top knot, long hair on the ears and a ball on her tail....no hair on face...short hair on body and legs.
