Yes people can be very judgmental & Jesus frowned upon self-righteousness. No one should think they are better than anyone else & put others down. A Christian should accept & love all people (though some are harder than others!) Jesus associated with many of society's outcasts (prostitutes, tax collectors etc that people looked down on). Very few of us really follow his example though...

Matt. 7:1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."
Beautiful BANDY! I hate to do this to you but I am going to have to cut-n-paste a LONG one from one of my own research papers.
Please forgive me but:
~~~~~`
Q. Are we, or are we not, supposed to point out error in other peoples beliefs
or teachings? Not even question them?
A. When corrected, the person being corrected usually retorts with the Bible
quote from 1 Thessalonians 5: 19. "Quench not the Spirit,".
It is sad that they do not read down to verse 21 to find "Prove all things"!
WE ARE TO BE VIGILANT, AND COMPARE ALL BELIEFS AND TEACHINGS
WITH THAT WHICH IS TAUGHT IN THE BIBLE!
We may "counter" with;
1 John 4: 1 "Try them..."
Romans 16: 17 "Mark them..."
Ephesians 5: 11 "Have no fellowship.."
1 Thessalonians 3: 6 "Withdraw thyself.."
2 John 10: 1 "Receive them not.."
2 Thessalonians 3: 13, 14 "Have no company with them.."
Thessalonians 3: 10 "Reject them.."
2 Corinthians 6: 17 "Be ye separate.."
Revelation 18: 4 "Come out.."
2 Corinthians 11: 13 "False Apostles transform themselves.."
2 Timothy 4: 2-4 "Reprove, Rebuke, Exhort.."
1 Peter 5: 8,9 " Be sober, Vigilant.."
Galatians 1: 8,9 "We or an angel from heaven preach.."
2 John 7: 8 "Many deceivers confess not.."
1 John 3-7 "If you walk in the light-we.."
Deuteronomy 22: 9-11 "Do not sow diverse seed.."
Ezekiel 4: 3 "Have nothing to do with.."
Nehemiah 9:2 "separate selves from all .."
2 Corinthians 14, 15 " Be not unequally yoked.."
Matthew 7: 20 "Beware false prophets.."
Another comment from the person whose false teachings are being pointed out
is often from Matthew 7: 1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged."!
Let us go down to read Matthew 7: 5 ~ It clearly states that after you get yourself
"straightened out" you should indeed correct others!
We are plagued with false teachers. There are many on the
television screen being watched by millions.
It is sad to realize that it is they that the general public think are the true Christians
and that their twisted thoughts are what we believe and Christianity is all about.
Your question and its details show that you yourself judge. You suggest that some Christians actions are driving people away. You would have to be judging to determine that. The context of Matt. 7:1 is speaking to people who want to deal with other people's sins without first dealing with their own. Jesus also said not to judge from the outward appearance, BUT MAKE A RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT.
If you claim what I'm saying here is wrong, it's because you are judging.
I think that people (christians and non christians ) have taken the judgement scriptures way out of context, misused the word judgem and judgemental.
Christians are to judge, how are we to discern what is appropriate , godly behavior and not?? The scriptures do not say DON'T judge. They refer to judging with a wrong motive or wrong attitude. Remove the plank from oyur own eye before you remove the splinter form your brothers. It does not say DONT remove the splinter- it says dont be a hypocrite. If your moitves are to see a persons life blessed, to give them correction in the spirit of love and mercy then it is appropriate to bring their sin to their attention- The word says you will be judged in the manner which you judged- we need to be very careful and discerning, making sure we are not walking in the same sin and we are not approaching the situation in a prideful manner. How many times does it give us instruction on confronting a brother that is walking in sin?? We are not to tolerate or turn a blind eye to sinful behavior, never judging right from wrong, but we are to do as Jesus did and temper justice with mercy- judge with a humble heart and a loving and merciful spirit.
Many people judge when they shouldn't. When Christ not 2 judge, it was for example if somebody asks us 2 borrow a dollar, that we shouldn't say no, cause we think they r gonna spend it on booz. If u know someone was a convicted thief, ushould use ur judgement to not ask them to house sit for u. does that make sense? when talking to someone about changing their ways, it should only be done in love. always thinking about that mote in the eye story.
Brandy, I agree with you. It's very hard not to be judgmental, and God wants us to let him do the judging.
Jesus only judged those who were religious, such as the Pharisees and his disciples. He inspired and motivated people to come to Him.
He treated the woman at the well with compassion but beat the money changers at the temple.
Speaking the Truth is not being judgmental. If people feel judged then that is the Holy Spirit convicting them. Yes, we can drive people away if we speak in a condescending and arrogant way. Jesus said, "Come unto me...for I am meek and lowly in heart and you will find rest..." He is our example.
No, Us Christians aren't being judgemental very often. But we are supposed to be wise in things, especially when we meet those that are in darkness and that are un-believers. We will know those people by their fruits. I don't remember what Chapter that's in. But we are to do God's will for us and minister to the sick, needy and un-believers. As Christians we all have fallen short of the glory of God. I've been a christian since I was 5
