honestly it depends on the size of your dog I can give you a list of what I spend on my dog she's a large Border collie

basics
dog food. buy premium dog food. it's more expensive but you get more bang for your buck, dogs require smaller portions and it's made with better ingredients. Her food runs at about $20.00 a month.

crate. necessary for training and the general well being of your dog. dogs often form storng attachments to their crates like you do to your home. lola's cost $75.00 but it's two sizes bigger than the one the vet recommended.

bowls. I've been through dozens. Plastics got chewed on and ceramic got broken. I've settled on a stainless steel bowl for her food I think it was $5.00 and Fresh flow fountain for her water (she only likes running water) it was $30.00. If you buy a regular bowl make sure to rinse it often.

Bed. I used to buy beds. But she just tears them up. They normally run in the range of 20-40 dollars. Lola likes old blankets better. She can push them around her crate. In the summer she pushes them all in one corner and only lays her head on them. In the winter she roots around under them.

Collar: I like the old navy collars. They're five bucks.
Lola walks in a harness. That was ten.
For training get a choke chain. That's another five.
Leashes are graded big dog weight. Get an appropriate one. They are between 5-20 depending on length.

Treats. probably $6.00 a month.

Toys. (These are lo's favs). Even at four she still chews like crazy. I make sure to have plenty of options for her to keep her mind active.
A Kong is a necessity. 10 bucks. Hartz makes a kong knockoff shaped like a fire hydrant that's only 5.00
Tug o War Rope Pull. 6.00
Cow Hooves 1.00
Pig Ears 2.97
Hartz Big Ball 2.97
Treat Ball. 5.97
Buddy GLo Ball 2.97
Buy frisbees from the dollar store.
If you're gonna buy tennis balls I suggest buying real tennis balls not those cheap imitations on the toy aisle. they are about the same price and will last three times longer.
Lola also has a race car she chases around with a tennis ball on the antenna. Okay maybe I'm spoiling her.

Vets.

visits are normally about $25.00

her annual checkup cost 250.00 but that included all of her vaccines including parvo, a heartworm test, a six month supply of sentinal, and six capstar caplets, as well as a bag of diet dog food (she'd put on about four pounds over the winter).

Sentinal is great. It prevents heartworm tick fleas hook worms round worms and mosquitos. So while it seems expensive (100.00 for a six month supply) it actually saves you money.

Capstar is for adult fleas. My mom lives out in the country and lola loves running around out there. So when she comes in I give her a capstar and it kills any fleas that might have jumped on her within thirty minutes. This is more for our cats than anything.

Here's what we usually get for a new dog:

crate (kennel) -- around $60 to $75
food dish -- $7 or so
water dish -- $7
Nylabone chew toys -- $20
Dog treats -- $3
Retractable lead (leash) -- $25
Regular lead -- $10

That's what I consider the basics. The retractible lead is for letting the dog outside or for letting him play at the park. The braided lead is for vet visits and anytime I need to control the dog a little more carefully. The initial outlay is around $130 to $150.

Vet bills around my part of the Midwest run around $250 a year for the basic shots and heartworm medicine. I try to budget about that same amount for unexpected expenses such as illness and meds. If you have to board your dog around here, it's about $15 per day.

I may have forgotten something, and if so, maybe someone else will mention it. Hope this helps.

Edit:

Dog food, duh! My German shepherd has allergies, so I have to feed her Science Diet Sensitive Skin formula, which is a bit more expensive. It runs about $30 a month.

Dog food can go anywhere from $15 to $45 a month or more, depending on the quality of the food and the size of the dog. Dog treats add up to about another $10 a month.

http://www.petedge.com is one of the best places to get dog supplies cheap. They are a wholesaler, they are responsible for supplying most of what you see when you walk into a privately owned pet store... and you can buy everything at wholesale cost (you won't believe the markup on most items...)

Vet Visits for a puppy are usually around $50-75 for the first checkup and less if he comes back for additional vaccines. Heatworm prevention (recommended depending on location) is around $35 for 6 months and the spay/neuter is between $50 and $100.

Nowadays, everything comes in designer forms as well... meaning you can literally spend $600 on a Coach bag to carry your chihuahua and $50 for a designer bowl... I've actually seen a sapphire studded collar for $5k ;-)
