Any dog you take into your home and love and make part of the family will be a guard dog. You can't expect a dog, chained to a tree, to protect you, since you're not even taking care of him (that's an example)
So go to an animal shelter, and pick out a dog you like. It doesn't matter what breed, but make sure you let it stay inside your home and make it part of your family.. then you'll have a guard dog.

Try going to AKC website. they have a list of breeders. I would suggest getting a guide on guard dogs, and it really depends on what your guarding. you also have to make sure to teach the dog how to behave in a "working" and "resting" mode, so that he doesn't attack your friends as intruders. It's very important the dog know hows the distinctions of his day.
