Ticklish Kitten has a good point. Don't just come out and ask him "will you be my bf?" Instead, ask him to do something that you think he'd be into. For example, if he likes sports, ask him to go to a hockey game or something (as long as it's something you like too). That way you have some common ground so you can see if you get along etc. After that, you can decide if you'd like to spend more time with him. If so, then at the end of the date ask him if you can do that again. If he says "sure" then call his bluff: say "okay how about next Saturday?" (you know, set a specific time instead of just saying "let's do that again sometime"). If he says he can't go next Saturday (or whenever), give him your phone number and say "call me when you can go again." If he doesn't call, then you know it wasn't going to work.
