Because it is easier to explain who you are based on where you fit in with the world (ie race, sex, etc), than it is to truly understand one's self.

I think the "identity" you're referring to is one's Social Security number, credit cards, bank accounts, etc. When someone "steals" your identity by using your name and information it is a felony for them and a big mess for you - you'd need to get all new credit cards, driver's license, etc. plus alerting all your creditors that you have been a victim of identity theft so that any purchases made or checks cashed with your name and information will not become your responsibility. People put borders on themselves and others - not their individual identities.

it lets others know who we are. our personalities and the way we think and act all contribute. that is important because without identities, there would be no way for others to get to know an individual for who they are and like them or not. with out identities, wed be all the same.

I agree, if we were ore open to each other, we would find out 1. we are not so different, and 2. we would never be alone!!
Sad, that most of go through life never really knowing what it is to love one another because it would affect our image?

"Thats the way you are indentified"
It dont put borders bt streamline the ppl/group.
if thr is no identity thn thr vil be no difference between those who wrk hrd for there success and those who are lazy.
identity is nothng bt timely polish on ur image for ur efforts......whether its cultural, social, political,profesional...everythng.
those who dnt put efforts, thr identity remains as old unpolished shoes whc starts stinking as time goes......

well, it's nice to have differences. makes it interesting. i love learning about other cultures. i think it's cool. i think it's ok to associate with one group or another.
it's when people make an issue of it that it becomes a problem. like feelings of superiority or inferiority. that's when it becomes a problem. and that's just plain old ignorance, arrogance, fear and insecurity. people need to get over it.
