What separates those who are lively, smart, and interesting from those that are dull and mediocre? I want to thrive to become someone interesting, active, intellectual, and fun just like many others. What's the secret? Is it mostly tied to our backgrounds and is it possible to change?

I meant this posting as a more general know how than something that affects me personally. I'm confident I can be interesting sometimes too. What I really want to know is how can you become enormously interesting to all people? Typical examples could include celebrities like Alan Alda, Tom Hanks, Paul Bettany, etc. They always have a story to tell and can be enormously charming and funny (laugh out loud funny). I know it's a bad idea to compare ourselves to a celebrity, but do you know what I mean?

I'm convinced the answer is the people we meet and come across. Sometimes the environment isn't so nurturing.

You have to think good things about yourself and not be so inhibited. Most people who are "lively" and "funny" don't let themselves think too much about how others view them. Myself included. Also, beating up on yourself isn't going to help the way you feel about yourself. If you wouldn't say mean stuff to another person, then you can't say it to yourself.

The only difference is that they have developed their interests, while you have not - yet. Those that appear smart and interesting may not actually be, but they are probably confident because they have developed their interests. And they have spent a lot of time doing it: it does take commitment over an extended period of time to develop anything substantial. You do have interests, start exploring them, and then try to pick 1 or 2 to develop significantly.
Firstly, developing significant skill in pretty much anything takes a substantial investment of time and effort. Worse is that first you have to do this IN ORDER TO achieve high skill AND THEN it may take quite a bit longer (months or more) BEFORE you will feel any different. Yep, you will be the last to fully accept in yourself what others will see in you first.
Above all don't be fearful and accept set backs on the way to developing anything substantial. All the best.

First you must have an intersting hobby. I collect miniature things. You could collect anything you like! Start to wear your hair a little differently. Begin eating out at the same restaurant. Be friendly with the waiters. Get to know them and let them know you. When you finally are friends with one, take in a gift of what your favorite waiter likes and say "I thought you might like this".
When you have free time, investigate things. Go driving and find strange wild flowers. Keep a journal of what you see in nature.
Go to local museums and soak in knowledge and enjoy it too.
Try painting a picture. You might even enjoy taking some art lessons.
You must reach out to discover and enjoy!
Good luck!

Well if you believe that you are a product of your environment then maybe you need a change in atmosphere. Trying singing up for a few group activities like softball, tennis, and such to be around others who are also active adults. One I recommend is Leukemia and Lymphomas Team in Training. They teach you how to run or walk for a marathon and in return you fund raise for them. This is what got me motivated to be a better person, lots of fun and anyone (any fitness level) can do this.

Why bother??? If you haven't needed to "get started" before now then why start? Just relax and let the flow take you along. Nothing big is gonna happen but on the other hand you won't be the complete loser that you could be if you try and fail!

Take a genuine interest in things. Take interest in all things. Find out whats interesting in each person - everyone has something. Avoid sarcasm and cynicism. Be for things, not against things. Take up a hobby that really interests you.

Only by your actions can you change your thinking. It does not work the other way around. This is a very important fact of life. Learn it sooner rather than later.

break it up into steps. for instance figure out what your talents are. no one is unintersting, there must be something youre good at. find something that motivates you.
its possible to change, but overwhelming if you try to take on too much at once. take lil steps.
