Its not always that way, it just depends on how many birds there are. If there's an even number of birds and one is at the front, obvioulsy one side will be longer because it will have one more.

One side is usually longer because geese can't count. They have no idea if one side has more geese than the other. Plus, they don't care about the formation being symmetrical because they have no notion of what that means. They fly in the V shape because the ones behind are drafting the ones in front. It's easier for them to fly. After a time, the leader will fly off the formation and join it at the back to get his rest. Either side, he doesn't care.

The geese automaticly form a v so the next one in line goes to the outside of the form...
And then another one goes to form the longer side and then another comes along and helps form the perfect V...
Hope you understand what I meant...
But it will always look like that until another one comes in and takes his place in the V --and so on & so on & so on....
Thats what a little bird told me !!!

It is not really longer...it only appears longer from where you are in relation to the flying geese.

When they make the formation they may not be so much concerned with the symmetry, but more with the pecking order. If this is the main concern then the chances are against a symmetrical formation.

Maybe because a symmetrical formation doesn't occur to geese, as it might to us?

They probably don't consider the way their formation look from the ground... or if they do, they don't care.
They fly in a V for aerodynamic advantage, not aesthetics.

Geese aren't anal compulsive or real good at math.
