I took amitryptaline for awhile. I had too many side effects and stopped. (I didn't have ANY dreams while I took it.) I was often tired. I gained weight.
Talk to your doctor and see if you should change meds.

I take it. I lay around depressed to the point of being catatonic for 7 years. I tried everything and low and behold that medicine was given to help me sleep and I started to get better. They don't like to use this drug because it has very many side effects. Look it up on the Internet to read all of them. The dose I take is the absolute maximum. 300mg. I take it with other antidepressants. The choice I made with this drug is quality of life verses quantity.Your symptoms tell me lower the dose or switch meds. Amitryptaline should be a last resort medicine just for the side effects you describe. For me it makes me feel so crummy every day if I ever get sick I don't realize it for 1-2 days

Ok, despite our differences, I was prescribed that for anxiety. I took it ONE time and I slept all night despite the fact that I have insomnia. BUT, I had a headache the whole day the next day and I even stumbled and fell into the kitchen table cause I was so dizzy. Felt like I had a ton of bricks on my head. I stayed in bed that whole day, all night and didn't wake up til the next afternoon. Don't take it. Try lexapro. That's what I'm on now. 30mg. I've been on it all. If you have depression it also helps that. I'm bipolar so I'm on Lamictal as well.

I was groggy for the first few days, but that went away. But, I did gain 20 lbs so I switched to something else. As others have said, dry mouth is a side effect which can also affect your teeth.
I did not have nightmares.

When I was taking it, I experienced: drowsiness, dry mouth, Increased appetite, strange taste in mouth and that's really it. It really did help me to sleep.. but I didn't have nightmares while on it nor did it make me feel dizzy.

I had fuzzy vision (for the first month), drowsiness and extreme thirst. Do check with your doctor or pharmacist soon. The medication (or dosage) might not be suitable for you.
