They are trying to be the 'daddy'

Father's generally do this, to give the kid a bird's eye view. Men typically don't tire of this because they are designed with superior upper body strength.

Since many women today have 'kicked daddy to the curb' they feel it is their duty to do all the things a father would. They are sorely missing the mark. No one can replace a father. Plus they are making themselves have bigger shoulders...not very feminine.

I don't do this, I have a stoller for my under 4 year old son. The bigger ones walk.

It is easier on your shoulders than carrying a child in your arms on your hip, because the weight can be carried directly on top of the spine. I sometimes carry my little niece this way if I forget a stroller. I also like to carry my laundry basket on my head because it makes it easier to carry. It is actually less tiring as it uses the way our bodies are designed. That why you see Indian girls carrying 50lb. water jugs on their heads. It is efficient.
