There are many reasons to go to church. Amongst the real and good reasons are to worship God, have fellowship with other believers, and help support a ministry to others.
Among th bad ones are, you think it will get you into heaven, it gets you social status, and the list goes on.
God made up the ritual in the OT. Remember the ten commandments?
No you wont go to hell for not going to church, just not having a relationship with Christ.

I cant answer for other people, but I go to share new ideas with others who beleive in the same things I do. Its like a gather of friends more than anything else for me. However, I do not personally think that if you do not wish to go to church you have to. You will not go to Hell or anywhere else if you dont. As for who made up the ritual, it used to be in small towns and villiages they would get together once a week for like a gathering to exchange news, swap one item for another, ect. It slowly evolved into becoming a time of worship in many faiths as stores moved into the towns, and villages were incorperated as towns themselves. It was also the one and only time during the week alot of employers used to give their workers off. I seriously think that if you put two and two together, the services got held on thier day off to keep them from becoming to drunk to work back then. I could be wrong, but hey, its a theory.

There are lots of reasons people go to church: Some go because they want to learn about and worship God. Others go to socialize or because they think it makes them holy or they think it will help them get into heaven, etc....
No you will not go to hell if you do not attend church but if you truly want to live a spiritual life it is helpful to spend time with others who are living the same way.

I really like Mike A's answer!
I am adding to it:
To go to heaven all that is required is for you to be good. This means to follow your conscience. EVERYONE has a conscience.
You don't need to know Jesus, nor the Church, but it HELPS! For example, It's much easier if you learn math (life) with a book (Bible) and a teacher (Jesus) than to have to come up with all the principles and axioms on your own, isn't it?
The "ritual" of going to Church/Mass was "invented" by Jesus when He said "Do this in Memory of Me" during the Last Supper.
When people tell me that they can worship God at home because God is everywhere, I ask them: Does He die and resurrect at your house everytime too? That is what He does at every Mass.
You can go to heaven without being Catholic, without being Christian even, but it is just harder.
I am a practicing Catholic. Jesus healed me after 5 years of rheumathoid arthritis instantly. So my faith has GROWN! I no longer doubt. I go to church because I can't stop myself. I love it. Jesus speaks to me through Scriptures, the Holy Communion. I love all of the Sacraments. I am in LOVE with Jesus and HIS CHURCH.
The true God bless you!

God made this ritual up.. are you going to hell because you don't go to church? NO.
church or religion doesn't save you.. only your belief in Jesus being the son of God will get you there.
I go to church to worship, I feel closer to God there, but you can worship anywhere.

People go to church for so many reasons. Some wants to be healed and sanctified, some wants to meditate, some just go there for nothing and so on. People has their own reasons.
You won't go to hell if you don't cause your faith to God cannot be just measured by that. This 'ritual' as you mentioned it, is already as old as time so, its impossible to tell who started it.

I LOVE to go to church. It is so fun! I go to worship the one and only God along with other believers. It is awesome. There were all kinds of temples and such even before Jesus. In Jesus time Christianity began and Christian churches. It was "made up" thousands of years ago, people gathering to worship. Church does not get u into Heaven. Jesus does. Church enriches a Christian's life.

Well, HE gave me life. I can at least go to church for an hour once a week. I try to live the Christian life 24/7 - not always successful, but I try. I go to church because 'whenever two or more are gathered in my name, I am there' - to paraphrase.
Also, it is in the bible that we should give one day to him. Who made it up? Ummm... God, on the 7th day - Genesis.
Will you go to hell, no, I don't think so. Personally, I'm not willing to risk it. But the, I love going to church - it inspires me and thrills me to be with people that love God and want to share their time with Him and with me, for that matter.
It's beautiful, wonderful, and inspirational. I can't imagine lasting a whole week without it.
God bless!

I doubt that you will go to Hell for not attending church. I go because I'm genuinely interested in learning more about religion--my own, and that of other people whose churches I visit.

In scripture we are told not to forsake the assembly of the church. God always has a reason for things He wants us to do and it's always because He wants the best for us in everything. The reason God wants us to "go to church" is because He knows what is best for us. He knows how difficult it is to stand against the pressures of our sinful culture that surrounds us. One person standing alone -- that's tough. But when you can give strength to your fellow Christians and they can likewise strengthen you, it is so much easier to live a life of submission to God and be pleasing to Him. You don't have to go it alone but if you choose not to gather with fellow Christians that is exactly what you have chosen to do. I know I need the support of my fellow Christians to get through life. Remember, no man is an island. I hope the best for you in all things. God bless.
