The chicken. An egg cannot hatch without the warmth of a chicken sitting on it. If the egg came first, it would have never been born, therefore, there never being a chicken.

That depends in what you believe. If you Believe in bible, then it was the chicken because God created animals and not eggs. If you believe in The origin of the species (Darwin), then the egg, the animal who put the egg wasn't a chicken, the first chicken came in that egg in what may be described as a leap in evolution.

Many dinosaurs laid eggs and they were on earth long before chickens were.
Of course if your question only refers to chickens, well that might require another answer.

The answer would be the egg, the chicken that resulted from that egg had to be a mutant of another bird. Just like every creature, including races of people. Just think, at one point in history there had to be only one race of people and the rest are mutants of that original race, so at one point in history there was one one species of bird and the rest resulted from that one.
